According to Bert Monroy's site that I linked to, it took 4 years to create. That "photo" is an illustration done with Photoshop, not a photograph. He probably started it 4 years ago and then updated the elements of it to reflect the most updated rendering of Times Square. You will have to ask Bert for the details behind it.

I just happened to run across this article as I was googling a picture of Spongebob. Ha ha ha! Oh the irony!

I was aware of the "study"they had done and found it laughable. Really? Who do they test this stuff on anyway? I would be more concerned with the parents that are willing to offer up their 4 year olds for these random "studies" than I would be with my kid watching an episode of Spongebob. I mean really.... who offers their 4 year old up to complete strangers to test something on them that they deem "harmful"?

When it comes right down to it...... most things on television are harmful to anyones memory, attention and self regulation. Look at the most popular adult shows. Most of them are just mind numbing trash we watch to escape our own reality. Kinda makes Spongebob look normal.

They also mention that they tested against "Caillou ". Every episode is filled with Caillou (a bratty 3 year old) crying and whinning because he can't get his way. I would much rather my child watch a show about a sponge with a sunny disposition who always sees the world with a "glass is half full" attitude. Better yet.... turn off the television and interact with your child yourself.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?......

Did you watch it with the volume off? He says right at the beginning of the scene that not everyone is interested in dress shirts, so in case you aren't he's giving you the chance to watch the scene on the left. It's random humor.

Yes, that will be interesting when they get there. I'm not sure how excited I am about an "app driven" online world. It may be inevitable ,but its almost like we're moving back to a controlled desktop paradigm vs. the open standards of the Web.

This fits great. This would be even more ideal if the slider automatically moved back to the default position on mouseout.

That is a sweet infographic. I think its very well done. The only question is why don't you have the individual games link to a summary article (from ESPN or BBC or wherever) that details what happened in the game? Its nice to play with the "wheel" but there is no pay off in terms of getting details on the individual games.

Awesome Top sites of 99! I love looking back at this stuff. I know tons about the ecommerce stuff but the other ones I'm pretty shaky on. Gr8 to check out the 'failures' - magazines, portals, and ahead of their time (broadcast.com). These really mirror the 'real' world. Just b/c a business in 'online' doesn't increase or decrease its risk of going under.

This sucks. I was always hoping he'd made a Terrance Malick/Stanley Kubrick type comeback, giving us another great teen comedy. Nobody else could write teen comedies like he could -- he made the characters real, not cliched, and the stories were timeless.

I wish the Sharks would do things like this. You would think that a team located in the heart of Silicon Valley would be on top of this kind of stuff and not have an incredibly lame website and marketing program and bad relations with their fans. You would think that, but if you did you would be wrong.

There is reason to go that route too. Its a tough call. ISC seems to understand the connections between the movies and characters, so I felt I had the flexibility to show him the movies in theatrical order.

I had the same debate in our house with Sam. We decided to watch them in order. After reading many blogs, it was clear that it would be too confusing to go back and watch it. You have to understand that we were much older when 1,2,3 came out. We can easily understand that they went back in time and why. The kids will have a harder time. M

See, I'm checking out your blog.Book 5 was my favorite too. I don't think Harry will be killed off unless he dies an old man in the epilogue.Suggestion - I think we should all go see the movie when it opens in July - another team event. We have a multiplex right across the street from the office!

I completely agree. The same goes for many other NPR shows (CarTalk, Diane Rehm, etc). It seems like NPR (remember, it stands for Nationaly PUBLIC Radio) should be made freely available by mandate of the very mission statement of public broadcasting.Perhaps we should email that senator who got an ipod from his daughter ;)

Robert, I was actually very much looking forward to the keynote after I heard you would be speaking, yet I found the end result disappointing (maybe should have used that word instead of pathetic...I did not intend my post to come off harsh and I do apologize if that's the way it read). I found the speech disjointed and rambling, without focus or a cohesive message that the audience could grasp hold of. It sure appeared to me that little to no preperation went into it, and all you and your partner did was just get up there and start talking. I could not tell if the speech was to promote your book, or your recent successes.<br /><br />If you and Shel are going to be speaking in support of your book, I'd consider spending a bit more time thinking about what are the key messages you want to communicate, researching the type of audience you'll be speaking to, and then tailoring and focusing the message to the points and topics that will engage them.<br /><br />As you said, I am sure some found the discussion interesting. But for this audience member, I thought there was a lot of room for improvement.

Stephen,It was great meeting and hanging out with you as well! I'm glad you found the conference interesting and relevant and know you'll be able to hatch some great ideas from the takeaways. If nothing else, it's always great to connect with a kindred spirit.Sorry Robert, but he's right. Love what you've done for the blogosphere. Love your book. Not too thrilled with your speaking.

Interesting, I had a line of people coming up saying we were the best keynote of the conference.Shows you can't please everyone (something I already knew -- when I planned conferences even our best keynotes, by ratings, got lots of complaints). But, I'd like to learn what made you think it was pathetic so I can improve next time.

I've actually done allot of reading about the slow down since I've been a netflix customer for several months now. I think for the most part it is an over blown experience.Netflix has never slowed down for me. In general it sound like it would only slow down if you were going through 1 movie a day. Their problem is volume. If you rent too many movie a month they lose money. I think the number I've read is some where over 12 movies a month.Netflix does take the past in consideration. You can rent a whole lot on month and then not so much the next and Netflixs will not penalise you.The people who complain about Netflix really seems to be the people who watch a movie every day and send it back. Netflix can't handle you renting 30 movies a month.I started netflix right after I moved to Boston and had yet to find a job. With tons of free time I went through a lot of movies. Two months later when I found a job and my renting slowed down. I never once experienced a bump in service.

Like Rob, I've also written a version. It seems to work in IE6, FF, Moz and Opera 9; it's also keyboard accessible, handles browser font resizing and uses a Robert Penner easeIn algorithm for the snapIn/snapOut animation effect.Great little idea stephen, especially as the original simpleBits miniTabs must be one of the most prolific menu designs on the WWW.A demo can be viewed here:http://www.frequency-decoder.com/demo/animated-minitabs/Of course, I didn't know the idea originated with you and so I will have to change the blog post to point in this direction...Cheers,Brian

I've developed a variant of this navigation I'm calling <a HREF="http://www.rootarcana.com/blog/archives/000654.php" rel="nofollow">Smart Mini Tabs</a>. It extends the usability a bit. I thought you might like to check it out. :)

Hi,That Navigation is really cool. Im new to CSS and Javascript. I noticed that I could change the speed of the slider in the javascript one way, but was unable to change the other. Even in your demo it slides one way faster. I wanted to slow it a bit and make both directions slide the same speed. Can this be done?

One of my queer perversities involves changing all fonts to relative font-sizes, and I have taken the liberty to do so with your CSS code. #navheader { position:relative; margin:0 auto; width:100%; height:1.2em; border-top:1px solid #fff; border-bottom:1px solid #78919B; background-color:#fff; padding:6px 0 0 0; z-index:0; max-width: 1000px; } #navheader li { position:relative; display:inline; font:0.8em verdana; padding:0; z-index:20; display : block; float : left; } #navheader li a { text-decoration:none; color:#000; display: block; text-align: center; width: 8em; } #navheader li a:hover { text-decoration:none; color:#999; } #slider { position:absolute; background-color:#FFF; border-bottom:.3em solid #78919B; width:5.2em; height:1.2em; margin:0 2px; z-index:1; margin-left:5px; }Thanks for the sliding tabs.
I'd rewrite it to make the transition constant time rather than constant slide speed, using a cosine stepper, i e x(t,x1,x2) = cos(PI*t/2)*(x2-x1)+x1, t stepping from 0.0 to 1.0. It would probably also make for a snappier interface experience.

Just a little FYI, Windows Live was created long before Google's attempt at it. It's getting a little old that people keep saying how Microsoft copied Google's site when in fact is the exact opposite.Just wanted to make sure you were aware of that.
