Here is a visual of all the teams that have been in and out of the English Premier League (the soccer/football league across the pond for those of you who don’t follow the sport :). As you would think, teams like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United are multiple time champions and have never been relegated (sent to the second division). Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur have never been relegated but have also never won the Premiership. Swindon Town was in the Premier League for a cuppa tea in 1993-94 and have not touched it since. And sadly, my Newcastle United club was relegated this year for the first time since the EPL’s first year in 1992.
Here is an interesting article from the Telegraph of London detailing 50 things that the Internet is killing off. A few to consider:
3) Listening to an album all the way through The single is one of the unlikely beneficiaries of the internet – a development which can be looked at in two ways. There’s no longer any need to endure eight tracks of filler for a couple of decent tunes, but will “album albums” like Radiohead’s Amnesiac get the widespread hearing they deserve?
10) Watches - Scrabbling around in your pocket to dig out a phone may not be as elegant as glancing at a watch, but it saves splashing out on two gadgets.
14) Dead time – When was the last time you spent an hour mulling the world out a window, or rereading a favourite book? The internet’s draw on our attention is relentless and increasingly difficult to resist.
21) Delayed knowledge of sporting results – When was the last time you bought a newspaper to find out who won the match, rather than for comment and analysis? There’s no need to fall silent for James Alexander Gordon on the way home from the game when everyone in the car has an iPhone.
The other day I was checking out Google Maps and their new traffic monitor feature. I wanted to see what sort of traffic was happening here in the wonderful Garden State over the Labor Day weekend. And as I looked, I saw nothing but green, meaning clear roads ahead. So as I expanded the view of the map, all I saw was more green on the American roads. So I guess on this day that I was looking at Google Maps, there was no traffic in the US.
Today, Michael Jordan is being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, along with C. Vivian Stringer, Jerry Sloan, John Stockton, and David Robinson. ESPN has put together a compilation of the 23 best moments of MJ’s career (Note: ESPN could have done a better job of this page by making the videos play continuously instead of the way they have it, which requires the user to click on every clip).
Architect Rainer Mielke has convered several old bunkers in Bremen, East Germany into new buildings and houses. What is pretty neat is that with the walls of these structures being so think, they naturally keep the inside spaces cooler than outside.
